The Spanish government has launched a substantial €5 billion aid package designed to alleviate the economic pressures resulting from rising energy prices, heavily influenced by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized that this conflict could cost the Spanish economy approximately €5 billion, asserting the government’s commitment to reduce its impact. The package comprises 80 different measures intended to support approximately 20 million households and three million businesses across the nation.

Among the key measures of the aid package is a significant reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) applicable to motor fuels, electricity, and natural gas, which will decrease from 21% to 10%. This tax cut, along with reductions in excise duties, could lead to savings of around 30 cents per liter of fuel for consumers. Furthermore, prices for propane and butane will remain fixed, ensuring that essential gas supplies remain affordable for households. Additional relief will be provided to consumers through the temporary suspension of electricity production taxes and other reductions in ancillary costs, aimed particularly at energy-intensive industries, which are expected to save nearly €200 million.

The package also emphasizes social protection measures by strengthening safety nets for vulnerable families in Spain.
