Koizumi and German Defense Minister Confirm Cooperation in Talks: 'Focus on the Middle East, But Do Not Create Gaps'

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius discussed security cooperation between Japan and Germany, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in light of Middle Eastern tensions.

On the 22nd, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi held talks with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at the Yokosuka naval base in Kanagawa Prefecture. During the meeting, they exchanged views on the situation in Iran and reaffirmed their commitment to closely collaborate on security matters amidst rising tensions in the Middle East. Pistorius previously expressed concerns over potential conflicts related to U.S. President Trump's proposals for NATO member states to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the need to avoid being drawn into such disputes.

Koizumi emphasized the increasing importance of tight cooperation between like-minded nations, stating, "As the world's attention is focused on the Middle East, we must not allow any gaps in the security of our surrounding areas, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region." This statement underscores Japan's strategic focus on maintaining regional security while addressing broader global issues. Pistorius echoed this sentiment, noting that the strength of their partnership is evident in the current challenges posed by Iran and regional tensions in the Middle East.

The discussions also included a proposal from Pistorius for a 'Reciprocal Access Agreement' (RAA) to facilitate mutual visits between the Self-Defense Forces of Japan and German military personnel for joint training. Both ministers emphasized the inseparable link between European-Atlantic security and Indo-Pacific stability, and agreed to deepen defense cooperation and exchanges to ensure the security of both nations and contribute to regional peace and stability, affirming their intent to consult and respond collaboratively as needed.
