Cities of Greater BH are champions in water waste, study points out
A study reveals that Ribeirão das Neves and Betim are among Brazil's cities with the highest water waste rates.
A recent study conducted by the Instituto Trata Brasil has highlighted that Ribeirão das Neves and Betim, both located in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte, rank among the cities in Minas Gerais with the highest rates of water waste. This alarming finding is accentuated as we approach World Water Day, which is observed on March 22, a day set aside to raise awareness about the critical importance of water resources. The study underlines that significant water loss occurs due to inefficiencies in the distribution process, affecting both households and businesses alike.
The report revealed staggering water wastage figures: Ribeirão das Neves has a waste rate of 57.65%, while Betim follows closely with 54.39%. In contrast, the state capital, Belo Horizonte, showcases a lower, yet still concerning waste rate of 41.63%. These figures not only underscore the urgent need for improved water management but also reflect the increasing pressures on water reservoirs that serve the Greater Belo Horizonte region. The implications of such high waste levels are particularly evident as these municipalities struggle to maintain adequate water supply amidst persistent drought and climate change uncertainties.
Furthermore, the study draws attention to the direct impact of this waste on local reservoirs, which are integral to the region's water supply. Current reservoir levels indicate potential shortages, with Vargem das Flores at a critical 92.5%, Serra Azul at 51.7%, Rio Manso at 87.2%, and the Paraopeba System at 76.7%. These statistics not only highlight the reservoir health but also signal an urgent call for local authorities to implement strategic measures to mitigate water wastage and ensure sustainable water use in the expanding urban landscape of Greater Belo Horizonte.
