Slovenia: Trump-friend favorite in heated election
Former Prime Minister Janez Jansa is expected to make a comeback in Slovenia's upcoming parliamentary elections amid a controversial campaign.
Janez Jansa, a longtime political figure in Slovenia and supporter of Donald Trump, is poised to return to power as he leads in polling ahead of the parliamentary elections on Sunday. Jansa, who has previously served as Prime Minister three times, faces off against the incumbent, Robert Golob, whose center-left coalition has fought hard to retain power amidst allegations of dirty campaigning.
The electoral battle has been particularly intense, with Golob accusing Jansa of employing the infamous Israeli security firm Black Cube to spy on opponents and gather damaging information. In return, Jansa's party, the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), has struck back by questioning the background of Golob’s ally Marta Kos, suggesting she has ties to past police activities in former Yugoslavia. This exchange highlights the contentious nature of the election and raises concerns about the integrity of the democratic process in Slovenia.
Women’s rights activist Nika Kovac has been vocal about the implications of a potential Jansa comeback, suggesting such an outcome would threaten Slovenia's democratic values. She emphasized the gravity of the choice voters face, stating, "We must decide whether we want to live in a democracy or an authoritarian state." This sentiment reflects deeper worries among some factions about the direction Slovenia may take based on the election results.
