A new map of maternity wards in Poland is being created. Criteria have been announced that must be met.

The Polish Ministry of Health is planning a new map of maternity wards to address the dramatic decline in birth rates and the subsequent closures of maternity facilities.

In response to a significant decrease in birth rates in Poland, which has led to the closure of numerous maternity wards, the Ministry of Health has announced plans to create a new framework for these facilities. Since 2020, a total of 81 obstetrics and gynecology departments have been shut down, with 27 closures occurring just in 2025. This situation underscores the urgent need for changes that ensure safety for mothers giving birth across the country.

The proposed reconfiguration of maternity wards will be outlined through the establishment of a new map that prioritizes safety and accessibility. During the recent Health Challenges Congress, officials revealed that the revised network of maternity facilities will focus on two primary criteria. Firstly, maternity centers must demonstrate adequate clinical experience and have the capacity to handle at least 700 births annually. Secondly, any expectant mothers should be able to reach their designated maternity ward within a maximum of 60 minutes.

Additionally, the government has suggested creating so-called birthing rooms in hospitals where obstetrics departments have been closed. However, this aspect of the plan has faced criticism and skepticism, raising questions about the broader implications and effectiveness of the proposed changes. As Poland grapples with this demographic challenge, the government's new strategy aims to ensure that mothers can safely deliver their children, but it remains to be seen how these plans will be implemented and received.
