Iran denies targeting US-UK base in Indian Ocean – Al Jazeera

Iran has officially denied targeting a joint US-UK military base in the Indian Ocean following reports of missile activity in the area.

Iran has publicly denied any intention to target the joint US-UK military base located on Diego Garcia, an island in the Chagos Archipelago, after reports emerged of two ballistic missiles being aimed at the facility. A senior Iranian official provided the clarification amidst tensions in the region, particularly concerning Iran's military actions against US interests. It was confirmed that none of the missiles reached the base, which serves approximately 2,500 personnel, mostly American, and plays a crucial role in military operations across various regions including the Middle East and South Asia.

In response to the reported missile activity, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the actions as "reckless Iranian threats". Despite the escalating situation, Cooper stated that the UK would refrain from engaging in offensive military operations but would continue to provide defensive support to its allies. This incident highlights the increasing volatility of the region and the potential for conflict as tensions between Iran and Western nations persist, particularly regarding Iran's missile capabilities.

The denial from Iran follows a pattern of retaliatory strikes against US military bases in the Middle East, with the nation also launching drones targeting the UK’s Akrotiri air base in Cyprus recently. These developments are part of a broader narrative of conflict in the region, as both sides remain on high alert for potential military engagements that could further escalate the ongoing tensions in the geopolitically significant Indian Ocean and adjacent areas.
