Social Democrats' branches are finalizing candidates for party chairpersons

The Social Democratic Party of Lithuania is set to announce candidates for its leadership positions, with significant names already proposed, as they prepare for upcoming elections in May.

The Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) is gearing up for its extraordinary leadership elections in May, following last year's resignation of its previous leader, Gintautas Paluckas. According to party representative Andrius Grumadas, the list of candidates will be made public on Monday. Notable figures such as the interim leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius, who is also the mayor of Jonavos district, and Robertas Duchnevičius, the mayor of Vilnius district, have been put forward as candidates along with parliament member Vytautas Grubliauskas and Akmenės district mayor Vitalijus Mitrofanovas.

Candidates will continue to be accepted until the party's congress on May 1, which is considered a vital step in shaping the party's future direction. The LSDP currently holds a significant position in Lithuania's political landscape as it is the largest parliamentary party with 52 representatives in the Seimas. As the party prepares for this leadership transition, discussions are also underway regarding possibly extending the leader's term from the traditional two years to four years, indicating an attempt to stabilize leadership within the party. This movement reflects the LSDP's response to the legal issues that previously affected its leadership and aims to maintain or enhance its influence in Lithuanian politics.
