Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay highlights the strong friendship between Japan and Bhutan, which has been fostered by the connection between their royal families, during his recent visit to Japan for the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
During a recent solo interview with Asahi Shimbun, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay discussed the significance of the diplomatic ties between Japan and Bhutan, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this month. He emphasized that the relationship has been strengthened significantly by the close friendship between the Japanese Imperial Family and the Bhutanese Royal Family. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for Japan's support in Bhutan’s development and invited further investments from Japan to sustain the country's growth.
Prime Minister Tobgay pointed out that the connection between the two nations dates back to 1964, when Japan dispatched agricultural expert Koji Nishioka as part of its Overseas Technical Cooperation Program, now known as JICA. This early collaboration laid the foundations for what would become a robust relationship built on mutual respect and support. He reiterated that the ongoing friendship between the two royal families has played a pivotal role in solidifying these diplomatic ties.
In light of these discussions, the Prime Minister's call for increased Japanese investment highlights Bhutan's aspirations for continued economic development and modernization. Given Japan's historical role in Bhutan's development, the Prime Minister's remarks may open further avenues for collaboration in areas such as technology and infrastructure, with the intention of fortifying the deep-rooted friendship between the two countries.
