São Paulo Metro approves prototype trains to be used in the expansion of line 2-green

São Paulo Metro has approved the design for new trains intended for the expansion of line 2-green and reinforcement of existing lines 1-blue and 3-red.

São Paulo's Metro has announced the approval of a new train design to be used for the upcoming expansion of line 2-green. The order includes 44 trains set to enhance the existing fleets of the blue and red lines as well. These new trains are expected to include several modern features such as USB charging ports, air conditioning, high-definition cameras, and the ability to move freely between carriages. The production of these trains will take place in Araraquara, São Paulo, by the manufacturer CRRC, based on a prototype developed in China, with an overall cost of R$ 3.1 billion.

The first phase of the expansion of line 2-green will establish a connection between Vila Prudente and Penha, covering a distance of approximately 8 kilometers and incorporating eight new stations. The completion of this segment is anticipated by 2028, with the future plans for a second stage aiming to extend the line further to Guarulhos, adding an additional five stations. This infrastructure move comes as part of the Brazilian government's broader initiative to improve public transport and accommodate the growing population in the Greater São Paulo area.

The approval of this new fleet not only signifies an investment in the modernization of São Paulo's public transportation system but also reflects a response to the urban mobility challenges faced by the city. As São Paulo continues to grow, enhancing public transit options is essential for reducing traffic congestion and promoting a more sustainable urban environment. The planned upgrades are expected to improve the daily commute for thousands of residents in the region, with the new trains being incorporated gradually starting in 2028.
