Suspicions of Arson Causing Forest Fire

Authorities suspect arson might have caused a forest fire in East Iceland, with efforts from multiple fire brigades to control the blaze.

On March 21, 2026, two fire brigades from the Fjarðabyggð area, along with a unit from Djúpavogur in Múlaþing, were dispatched to tackle forest fires that erupted in the region. The Fjarðabyggð fire department was called out twice in the day, indicating the seriousness of the situation and hinting at the potential threat posed by such fires in the area. The authorities suspect that arson may have been responsible for the second fire, which spread across approximately two hectares.

Reports indicate that the initial forest fire near Krossdalsá in Breiðdal was managed successfully after the fire department was first alerted. However, just after early afternoon, emergency services received news of another forest fire developing south of the town Krossgerði in Berufjörður. Fire engines from two different Fjarðabyggð stations and one from Djúpavogur quickly responded to the scene, illustrating the coordinated efforts required to combat the blazes.

Firefighters reported favorable wind conditions which aided in their work to protect surrounding residences. Fortunately, despite the considerable area affected by the flames, they were able to successfully bring the fire under control, with operations concluded later in the day. This incident raises concerns about malicious activities, emphasizing the need for vigilance and proactive measures to prevent such destructive events in the future.
