Temporary release benefits more than 7,700 inmates in the interior of SP before Easter

A temporary release program in São Paulo benefits over 7,700 inmates ahead of the Easter holiday, allowing them supervised leave from prison.

The temporary release program for inmates in the interior of São Paulo commenced on Tuesday, April 17, and will continue until Monday, April 23, just ahead of the Easter holiday, as announced by the State Penitentiary Administration (SAP). This initiative is part of a broader judicial allowance for inmates to spend time with family during significant holidays. The highest concentrations of released inmates are reported from Bauru, Pacaembu, and São José do Rio Preto, emphasizing the program's localized impact in these regions.

In the Presidente Prudente region, 955 inmates from four different facilities have been granted temporary release, contributing to the overall number that may fluctuate with potential new court decisions. In Bauru alone, over 4,000 inmates have received this leave, indicating a significant reliance on the program as a means of reintegration and family connection. The release program also includes 1,500 inmates from the São José do Rio Preto area and 570 from Sorocaba and Capela do Alto, showcasing a substantial benefit across multiple cities in the state.

Critics of the temporary release programs often voice concerns regarding public safety and the potential for recidivism among inmates, particularly during high-traffic holiday periods. However, proponents argue that such initiatives are crucial for fostering familial bonds and aiding reintegration efforts. With the program set to conclude shortly after Easter, it remains to be seen how it will be received by communities and whether any incidents will arise as a result of the inmates' temporary freedom.
