Russian Intelligence Services Hacked Thousands of Signal App Accounts
Russian hackers linked to intelligence services have gained access to thousands of accounts on commercial messaging apps, including Signal.
Russian hackers associated with intelligence services have reportedly compromised thousands of accounts on various commercial messaging applications, particularly Signal. This alarming revelation was made by the Director of the FBI, Kesh Patel, on the social media platform X, highlighting that the target audience for these hacks included users with 'high intelligence value' such as current and former U.S. officials, military personnel, politicians, and journalists.
Patel elaborated that the hacks enabled the attackers to gain unauthorized access to accounts, allowing them to read messages, view contact lists, send messages impersonating account owners, and execute further phishing attacks. He pointed out that the vulnerabilities exploited are not inherent to the applications themselves but rather stem from user actions, emphasizing the importance of enhanced security measures to protect personal data.
In a related context, Dutch intelligence agencies MIVD and AIVD reported earlier that Russian hackers had previously hacked WhatsApp and Signal accounts and potentially accessed communications involving high-ranking European officials and military personnel. This incident underscores the ongoing cyber threat posed by state-sponsored hacking groups, raising significant concerns about the safety and integrity of digital communications in sensitive sectors.
