Starting Saturday, only professional fishermen will be allowed to fish on the ice

Starting this Saturday, only professional fishermen will be permitted to fish on the ice due to poor fish populations.

As of Saturday, the Estonian government has announced that only professional fishermen will be allowed to fish on the ice. This decision comes in response to declining fish populations in the region, prompting many fishermen to retrieve their nets from the ice weeks earlier than usual. Despite the presence of ice on the western coast, conditions have not supported a sustainable catch, revealing ongoing environmental challenges affecting local fisheries.

In an interview, fisherman Matis Trei highlighted the exceptionally low winter water levels that have diminished the fish populations significantly. He indicated that scientists predict a replenishment of these stocks as salty water moves back from the ocean into the region through the Danish straits. Such environmental changes could potentially improve catch rates in the long run, but for the time being, the ice fishing season appears to be over, with fishermen preparing for the upcoming boat season instead.

The regulations set by the Estonian authorities also require fishermen to stock up on required supplies before heading out to sea, reflecting a shift in fishery management practices aimed at ensuring sustainability. Professional fishermen are now tasked with adapting to these new rules while also dealing with the immediate challenges posed by the ecological situation, marking a significant change in how fishing is conducted during the winter months in Estonia.
