Police reveals the amount of money found in a safe in a building in Quito and maintains investigation into its origin

Ecuadorian police discovered nearly $1 million in cash hidden in a safe during an operation in a Quito building as they investigate its origins.

On the afternoon of March 20, a coordinated operation by the National Police and the Prosecutor's Office led to the search of the basement of a building in northern Quito, Ecuador. During this operation, authorities uncovered a safe containing several bundles of cash, amounting to a staggering total of $992,560. This find has sparked an active investigation to determine the legitimacy of the money and how it ended up concealed within the urban area.

Major Luis Zambonino, head of drug investigation for the Metropolitan District of Quito, reported that the authorities are currently looking into the owner of the storage area where the safe was found, which required specialized machinery to open. The discovery followed a tip-off received through the 131 Rewards Plan hotline about unusual movements of money, indicating potential criminal activity linked to the cash.

As the investigation unfolds, law enforcement is keen on identifying the sources of the funds and any connections to drug trafficking or other illegal operations in the region. The case illustrates ongoing issues with organized crime in Ecuador's capital and the measures being taken by police to combat such activities.
