Competing with Blocket: 'Competition is Needed'
Tradera has launched free car advertising to compete with the dominant market player, Blocket, which has seen a decline in user engagement since its recent platform update.
Tradera, Sweden's largest auction site, has recently entered the car advertising market by offering free listings, which has led to a surge in interest from both private individuals and car dealers, resulting in over 10,000 car advertisements on their platform. Stefan Γberg, a representative from Tradera, stated that the initiative is part of a long-term strategy to disrupt established positions in the market, even though significant changes may take time.
Blocket, which has traditionally dominated the market with over 100,000 car advertisements, has faced criticism after a redesign last November that reportedly led to a sharp decline in traffic, prompting many car dealers to voice their concerns. This dissatisfaction has culminated in the creation of a Facebook group called "We who demand the old Blocket back," which has attracted 29,000 members who share similar frustrations regarding the changes that have drastically affected their advertisement visibility and engagement.
Several car dealers have testified to a dramatic drop in views for their advertisements on Blocket, with some indicating that their phones hardly ring anymore due to the platform's transformation. As competition heats up in the online car marketplace, the developments at both Tradera and Blocket illustrate the challenges of maintaining user engagement and market share in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
