Rain causes flooding and invades homes in Buriticupu, a city affected by giant craters
Heavy rains have flooded streets and invaded homes in Buriticupu, Brazil, which is known for its giant erosion craters.
Buriticupu, a city in the Maranhão state of Brazil, has been severely affected by heavy rains that resulted in flooding of streets and homes over the past 24 hours. The city is notable for having approximately 33 voçorocas, large erosion craters that have been encroaching upon neighborhoods for years. Local residents captured footage of the flooding, showcasing the desperate situation as homes filled with water, and belongings such as sandals and mattresses were swept away. One resident expressed their frustration on video, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Families living on Rua Independência in the Vila Isaías neighborhood, where a large crater is located, have reported significant material losses due to the flooding. Businesses have also been impacted, with some commercial establishments suffering damages. The flooding affected transportation as well; on the BR-222 highway, a truck became trapped amidst the swift floodwaters, illustrating the extent of the flooding that engulfed the area during the heavy rains.
In previous years, the local government had faced legal pressure to implement containment measures to address the erosion and flooding risks. However, reports from the Public Ministry indicate that these preventive measures have not yet been adequately executed, leaving the community vulnerable to such devastating weather events. This situation raises concerns about urban planning and environmental management in regions prone to extreme weather and geological changes.
