Entrepreneur Charged Ethiopian Care Workers Over 700,000 Euros as Fees in Finland

An entrepreneur in Espoo exploited the ignorance of Ethiopian nurses about Finnish law, illegally charging them fees totaling over 700,000 euros for employment services.

An entrepreneur from Espoo has been accused of illegally charging over 700,000 euros in fees from Ethiopian nurses who came to Finland to work in the healthcare sector. Between 2021 and 2023, Tesfa Hailegiorgis Alemayehun, who operates a consulting company, collected these fees from more than 200 Ethiopian professionals under the guise of 'service charges' necessary for their recruitment, often forcing them to pay thousands of euros. This practice contradicts Finnish law, which prohibits charging such fees for recruitment, a fact that many Ethiopian nurses were unaware of until after arriving in Finland.

The situation has raised serious concerns regarding ethical recruitment practices in the healthcare sector. Many nurses reportedly paid around 5,000 euros each for the opportunity to work, which is a substantial amount in Ethiopia, prompting them to sell property, take out loans, or seek financial help from family. The exploitation of these vulnerable workers highlights significant gaps in understanding and safeguarding the rights of international professionals, particularly those coming from economically disadvantaged countries.

This case sheds light on broader issues related to the recruitment and treatment of foreign healthcare workers in Finland, as well as the legal responsibilities of employers and recruitment agencies. It underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect international workers against exploitation and ensure that the rights outlined in Finnish law are upheld. The authorities must take decisive action to address these abuses to prevent them from recurring in the future.
