Czechs Struggle to Find Mental Health Care, Survey Reveals; Expert Offers Guidance on Navigating the System

A recent survey shows that Czechs often struggle to identify the appropriate mental health professionals for their needs, with many seeking care from incorrect specialists.

A survey conducted by STEM/MARK reveals that many Czechs are confused about the different types of mental health professionals and their specific areas of expertise. For instance, individuals often consult clinical psychologists for relationship issues or mistakenly expect therapists to prescribe medication. This confusion highlights a significant gap in understanding mental health resources available in the Czech Republic.

According to the Association of Clinical Psychologists of the Czech Republic, which commissioned the survey, one-third of Czechs have sought help for mental health difficulties at some point. Unfortunately, the spokesperson, Markéta Celerová, noted that while individuals may not receive an incorrect diagnosis, they are at risk of not getting the appropriate care because they are not turning to the right specialists for their issues. The report emphasizes the importance of understanding the different roles that mental health professionals play in the therapeutic process.

The association points out that there are two main reasons why people do not seek the appropriate specialists. The first reason pertains to a lack of knowledge about the specific qualifications and roles of various mental health practitioners. This oversight can lead to misguided treatment paths and an overall decline in the effectiveness of mental health care in the country. Raising public awareness and education on mental health resources is critical for ensuring that individuals receive the proper support they need.
