"Protecting children, not the supervisors": in Paris, a demonstration to "end the silence" on violence in after-school care

Parents gathered in front of the City Hall in Paris to demand action against violence in after-school programs.

A recent protest in Paris saw around fifty parents rallying in front of the City Hall to advocate for the protection of children from violence in after-school programs. The demonstration was part of the #MeTooÉcoles movement, which seeks to expose and address the incidents of abuse and violence that occur within educational settings, particularly during extracurricular activities. Protesters carried school bags and toys, which symbolized the emotional and psychological burdens that children bear when they are entrusted to these care systems.

Among the participants was Barka Zerouali, co-founder of the #MeTooEcole collective, who expressed the urgent need to 'end the silence' regarding these abuses. The parents highlighted the inadequacies within the current system that often prioritize the interests of the staff over the safety of the children. The movement not only aims to raise awareness but also to push for changes in policies governing after-school care to better protect children's rights and well-being.

As discussions about safety in educational environments gain traction in France, this demonstration represents the growing discontent among parents regarding the lack of accountability and transparency in after-school programs. It signals a shift towards greater advocacy for children's rights and sets the stage for further actions as they seek to influence upcoming municipal policies under the new mayor's administration.
