East Africa: Tanzania Resolves Amazonite Gemstone Mining Dispute in Karatu

Tanzania's government intervened to resolve a mining dispute between Paradiso Minerals Limited and investor Zhao Hao over the extraction of amazonite gemstones in Karatu District.

The Tanzanian government, represented by Deputy Minister for Minerals Dr. Steven Kiruswa, has successfully mediated a dispute involving the extraction of amazonite gemstones in Mandagawa Hamlet, Karatu District. This conflict arose between Paradiso Minerals Limited and Zhao Hao, who provided technical support for the mining operations. The minister emphasized the importance of adhering to Tanzanian laws, particularly the Mining Act and the stipulations set forth in the 2025 Technical Assistance Regulations, to ensure fairness and legal compliance in the mining sector.

During the meeting, Dr. Kiruswa proposed a practical solution by allowing Zhao Hao to extract gemstones under a temporary agreement, specifying that up to 70 containers worth approximately 1.4 billion Tanzanian shillings could be processed. This stipulation aims to resume mining activities while addressing the pending contract disputes. Following the completion of this arrangement, the existing contract with Paradiso Minerals Limited will be annulled to pave the way for a new, compliant agreement that adheres to regulatory frameworks established in the 2025 regulations.

This resolution not only demonstrates the Tanzanian government's commitment to upholding mining laws but also indicates a proactive approach to fostering a supportive business environment for investors in the mining sector. Ensuring that both local companies and foreign investors can operate under fair terms is crucial for the continued attractiveness of Tanzania as a mining destination in East Africa, thus having potential long-term implications for economic development in the region.
