Bangladesh has again threatened the ICC, now the board elections have stirred up controversy

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is facing multiple controversies, including turmoil surrounding its board elections amidst tensions with the ICC and BCCI.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has had a tumultuous year, facing multiple controversies that have dominated the headlines. Following a dispute related to pacer Mustafizur Rahman's IPL ban, the BCB announced its decision to withdraw from the 2026 T20 World Cup. This led to the Bangladesh government launching an investigation into the BCB's elections, during which questions have arisen regarding the selection of its president, Aminul Islam.

In a turn of events, the BCB has cautiously warned the government that excessive interference could escalate the situation to the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, former Asian Cricket Council (ACC) CEO Syed Ashraful Haque has criticized this move, labeling the BCB's reference to the ICC as merely a threat to shield itself from governmental scrutiny. He highlights that the BCB operates directly under the National Sports Council (NSC), which questions the legitimacy of the BCB’s claims of independence from government oversight.

Moreover, Ashraful emphasized that if the BCB fails to conduct its operations properly or if any irregularities in the elections are proven, the NSC possesses the authority to dissolve the board. This situation raises significant implications for the governance of cricket in Bangladesh, showcasing a broader struggle between sports administration and governmental oversight, as the future of the BCB—and by extension, Bangladesh cricket—hangs in the balance amid these ongoing disputes.
