Prenatal Genetic Testing: Moving Decision
The German Bundestag is seeking clarity on the ethical and health policy implications arising from non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) introduced in 2022, which has sparked significant debate among lawmakers.
Four years after the establishment of a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) for three genetic defects, the German Bundestag is reevaluating the ethical and health policy problems associated with this decision. Despite its introduction as a standard healthcare service in July 2022, the test is increasingly being used as a screening procedure without adequate consideration of individual risks, raising concerns about its implications on prenatal care. During a recent session, lawmakers from all factions of the Bundestag, except for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), united to bring attention to these pressing ethical concerns, highlighting the controversial nature of the NIPT's implementation and its impact on expectant parents.
