SHOCKING FIND: Killers of a rare animal caught thanks to a video that started circulating on social media
Three men in India have been arrested for killing a rare desert cat, the caracal, after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
In the Jaisalmer region of India, a rare desert cat known as a caracal was killed and burned by three men. The incident came to light after they recorded a video of themselves with the dead animal and shared it on social media, prompting prompt action from authorities upon noticing the footage. The event took place near Shahgarh, close to the India-Pakistan border and has raised concerns about wildlife safety in the area.
During the interrogation, the accused claimed that a wild animal had killed 50 of their livestock two days prior, motivating them to track down the caracal. They alleged that the cat died while they were pursuing it, but this claim was countered by conservationists who emphasize the endangered status of the species and the illegal nature of their actions. The Forest Officer Kumar Shubham confirmed the arrest of the three men and mentioned that a tractor they used was also confiscated, highlighting the gravity of the crime.
Moreover, the dead caracal was subjected to an autopsy, with samples sent to the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun for analysis. This incident highlights the environmental challenges faced by wildlife in India and raises alarms about poaching, as social media inadvertently plays a role in highlighting such crimes while also exposing the perpetrators. This reinforces the need for better wildlife protection measures and education on the importance of preserving endangered species.
