A hundredth of a second: Elmo Lakka reaches the World Championship semifinals
Finnish hurdler Elmo Lakka advanced to the semifinals in the 60-meter hurdles at the World Championships in Torun after a tightly contested race.
Finnish sprint hurdler Elmo Lakka successfully progressed to the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles at the World Indoor Championships held in Torun. He finished fifth in his heat with a time of 7.70 seconds, earning his semifinals spot through time trials by the narrowest of margins—just a hundredth of a second. This close call showcases Lakka's resilience and competitive spirit, as he managed to make it through despite not hitting his best performance.
Reflecting on his run, Lakka noted that it felt relatively clean, although he experienced some stiffness from the morning's earlier warm-up. He was initially under the impression that a faster time would be necessary to qualify for the semifinals, but he expressed relief that his performance met the mark this time. As he prepares for the semifinal round, Lakka acknowledges the need for a stronger effort, highlighting that his aim is to achieve a personal best to secure a spot in the finals.
Alongside Lakka, another Finnish athlete, Santeri Kuusiniemi, finished fifth in his heat as well with a time of 7.75 seconds. Kuusiniemi regarded his run as successful despite a mishap with the penultimate hurdle that disrupted his rhythm and prevented him from achieving a top time. The semifinals and finals are set to take place on Saturday evening, and both athletes are expected to push their limits for a shot at a medal.
