Passage of Major Crime Investigation Office Law Led by Democratic Party following Public Prosecution Office Law
The South Korean National Assembly has passed the Major Crime Investigation Office law, instituting the separation of investigation and prosecution.
On the 21st, the South Korean National Assembly held a session and approved the establishment of the Major Crime Investigation Office (중수청) law, which, along with the Public Prosecution Office law passed the previous day, formalizes the separation of investigative and prosecutorial powers in the country. The Major Crime Investigation Office will be responsible for criminal investigations while the Public Prosecution Office will handle prosecutions. The law was approved with 166 votes in favor and only one against, from a member of the Reform Party, despite opposition from the People Power Party, who branded it as 'destruction of the prosecution' and initiated a 24-hour filibuster to contest it.
