15-year-old cricketer scores century on T20I debut, sets world record
Rwanda's teenage cricketer Fanny Utagushimaninde made history by scoring a century during her T20I debut against Ghana.
Fanny Utagushimaninde, a young cricketer from Rwanda, has achieved a remarkable feat by scoring a century in her T20 International (T20I) debut at the Nigeria Invitational Women's T20I Tournament against Ghana. At just 15 years and 223 days old, she has set two significant records: becoming the first woman to score a century on her T20I debut and the youngest player ever to achieve this in T20 International cricket. Her performance included an impressive 111 not out off just 65 balls, which featured 17 boundaries.
The match was held on March 20 at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos, and Fanny's extraordinary inning surpasses the previous record for the highest score on a T20I debut, which was held by Australia's Karen Rolton, who scored 96 in 2005 against England. Additionally, Fanny's record as the youngest T20I centurion breaks the previous mark set by Ugandaโs Proscovia Alok, who scored a century at 16 years and 233 days.
This landmark achievement not only highlights Fanny's exceptional talent but also signifies the growing prominence of women's cricket in Africa. As discussions around gender equality and the expansion of opportunities in sports gain momentum, Fanny's record-setting performance serves as an inspiration to many young female athletes, encouraging them to pursue their dreams in cricket and beyond.
