Walking for life: We need to fight against illness, but love and respect the person with Down syndrome
Today marks World Down Syndrome Day, emphasizing the dignity of individuals with Down syndrome and their right to love and support.
Today, March 21, is recognized as World Down Syndrome Day, a date intentionally chosen to reflect the unique condition of Down syndrome, which is defined by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome. This important day serves as a reminder that every person possesses inherent dignity that is not based on their abilities but rather on their existence as human beings. The initiative 'Hod za život, obitelj i Hrvatsku' has issued a statement on this occasion, highlighting the need for love and respect for individuals with Down syndrome.
The statement, authored by national coordinator Željka Markić, asserts that every person with Down syndrome has intrinsic dignity, just like any other individual. It emphasizes that dignity is not conditional on abilities but is inherent to every human being. Research and surveys consistently show that individuals with Down syndrome who live in accepting environments report high levels of life satisfaction. This underscores the critical role that social acceptance and love play in the lives of those with disabilities.
Moreover, an American study on self-perception among individuals with Down syndrome revealed that nearly 99% of those surveyed expressed satisfaction with their lives. These findings highlight the importance of supportive communities and the need for society to foster environments that respect and value every individual, regardless of their abilities, thus ensuring that they live fulfilling and dignified lives.
