Mika ditches Porsches and gets into an affordable compact car – "200,000 kilometers is just the break-in for these cars"

Mika Särkelä, a 54-year-old former Porsche enthusiast from Espoo, embraces the iconic Nissan Micra, even creating a racing series for it in Finland.

Mika Särkelä, a 54-year-old man from Espoo, Finland, has completely changed his automotive preferences by trading in his Porsches for an iconic compact vehicle, the Nissan Micra. This small car, well-remembered among many Finns and introduced to the country in 1983, has captured Särkelä's heart to such an extent that he has even established a racing series specifically for Micra enthusiasts in Finland. His passion has sparked a minor cultural phenomenon in the automotive community, showcasing the Micra's charm and affordability.

At one point, Särkelä's family owned one of the most expensive Micras in Finland, which his wife bought as a company car for more than €40,000, fully equipped with all the luxurious features available. He emphasizes that his family’s second vehicle is still an old Micra model from 1993, which his wife drives. This illustrates not only their loyalty to the brand but also a shift in values from owning lavish sports cars to appreciating practical and fun compact cars.

Särkelä’s enthusiasm for the Micra is enhanced by his role as the marketing manager for Nissan’s imports in Finland. During the recent introduction of the sixth generation Micra in Vantaa, he curated a collection of Micras that showcased the car’s evolution over the years. His transition from a high-end car enthusiast to a champion of a compact, budget-friendly vehicle reflects broader trends in consumer preferences towards affordability and utility without sacrificing enjoyment in driving.
