US lifts sanctions on Russian nationals, Russia-linked entities

The U.S. has lifted sanctions on two Russian citizens and entities linked to Russia amid changing geopolitical circumstances.

On March 20, the U.S. Treasury Department announced the removal of sanctions on two Russian citizens, Yurii Korzhavin and Lidiya Korzhavina, as well as other entities linked to Russia. This decision comes during a period where the Trump administration has eased restrictions on Russian oil transit and purchases, a strategy aimed at addressing the surge in global oil prices influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Korzhavin and Korzhavina had been sanctioned since May 2024 due to their association with the Russian transport and logistics company Elfor TL, a business that faced sanctions in December 2023 for its role in international cargo transportation and customs clearance. Despite their removal from the sanctions list, the U.S. Treasury provided no specific reasons for this change, which raises questions about the criteria and processes underlying the imposition and lifting of sanctions.

The lifting of sanctions is significant, not only because it reflects changes in U.S. foreign policy priorities but also due to its implications for the broader economic and political relations between the U.S. and Russia. The decisions made by the Trump administration indicate a shift towards a more flexible approach in response to fluctuating oil markets, demonstrating how energy concerns can drive policy changes in international relations. This move could further influence perceptions of U.S. sanctions policies moving forward, as well as affect the business operations of entities involved in Russian logistics and transport sectors.
