Government Tightens Regulations on Devices Used in Digital Arrests by Blocking WhatsApp IDs
The Indian government has ordered WhatsApp to block device IDs used in digital arrest scams, in a move to tackle increasing cyber fraud.
The Indian government is taking major action against digital arrest scams by ordering WhatsApp to block the device IDs being exploited by scammers. This decision stems from a report by the Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, highlighting that many cyber frauds utilize WhatsApp for communication with victims through calls and messages. Cybercriminals often create multiple new accounts to continue their scams, necessitating a move to restrict them at the device level.
In addition to blocking device IDs, the government is considering implementing safety features on platforms like WhatsApp akin to those found on Skype, which can enhance security against malicious activities. The proposal also underscores the relevance of the IT Rules 2021 that require the retention of deleted account data for 180 days, thereby providing crucial support for investigation agencies tackling cybercrime. There is also a plan to identify and block malicious APKs and fake apps that facilitate these scams.
WhatsApp, being a widely used messaging app in India, has millions of users, thus making it a popular target for cyber scammers. By exploiting its popularity, scammers create fake IDs to deceive unsuspecting individuals. The government's decisive actions aim not just to combat these frauds but to instill a greater sense of security among the users of the platform, highlighting an urgent need to protect citizens from online threats.
