Long waits, frustration as technical glitches delay voting in SA
Technical issues have led to long waits and frustration among voters during the South Australian election.
Long queues and frustration have been reported across polling places in South Australia due to technical glitches affecting the electronic electoral roll. Voters faced long waits as electoral staff struggled to log in to access the necessary information to verify voter registrations. Delays in finding names on the roll exacerbated the situation, leading to significant lines at various booths.
The Electoral Commission of South Australia acknowledged the issues, specifically pointing out staff login problems at some polling booths. As reports of waiting times stretched on, some voters chose to leave without casting their ballots, frustrated by the delays. Former Senator Rex Patrick, who observed the situation in North Adelaide, noted that around 200 individuals were waiting to vote at one location, highlighting the widespread inconvenience experienced by citizens.
In response to the challenges, the Electoral Commission has advised voters to go to the polls later in the day when foot traffic generally decreases. However, the glitches raise concerns about the reliability of the electronic electoral system, as well as the impact these issues might have on voter turnout and confidence in the electoral process in South Australia.
