Heavy rain causes asphalt collapse and disruptions in Saquarema
Heavy rains in Saquarema, Brazil, caused asphalt to collapse and various disruptions throughout the city.
On Friday afternoon, heavy rainfall in Saquarema, located in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro, led to significant disruptions in various areas of the city. The Municipal Civil Defense reported that asphalt in the Rio Mole neighborhood collapsed over a culvert along a river. As a precautionary measure, this section of the road was cordoned off with safety tape, although traffic did not need to be halted in the area.
Additionally, in Rio Mole, a dirt road connecting the neighborhood to the Mombaça locality was closed preventively due to concerns about accumulated mud and the elevated river levels, which were close to overflowing. The decision to shut down this road was taken by the Civil Defense to ensure public safety amid the adverse weather conditions.
Residents in the Rio Seco neighborhood also experienced flooding, particularly on Paulina Reis Street, where images captured by locals illustrated a river flowing onto the street, resulting in considerable mud. Witnesses mentioned that an installed culvert in the area could not handle the high volume of water, contributing to the flooding problems.
