Coroner ‘cannot be satisfied’ that Ricky Hatton intended to take his own life

A coroner stated that there is insufficient evidence to conclude that Ricky Hatton intended to commit suicide after being found dead at his home.

In a recent inquest, a coroner determined that there is not enough evidence to support the conclusion that British boxing champion Ricky Hatton intended to take his own life. The coroner remarked that she 'cannot be satisfied' of the circumstances surrounding his death after it was officially ruled as hanging. Hatton, 46, was discovered dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on September 14, raising questions about his mental state prior to his passing.

Family members described Hatton as being in the best form he had been in years leading up to his death, attending social events with loved ones and preparing for an exhibition match in Dubai shortly before his death. He was last seen on September 12, where he shared lunch with his daughters and granddaughter and showed no signs of distress or unusual behavior, giving them the impression that he was in good spirits and looking forward to upcoming plans.

The discovery of Hatton's body was prompted by a concerned neighbour—later identified as his manager—following his absence from a scheduled event the next day. This tragic event has led to a broader conversation about mental health in sports and the pressures faced by athletes even when they seem to be at their best.
