Ukraine could force 2 million draft dodgers ‘out of the shadows’ – MP

Ukrainian lawmaker Solomia Bobrovskaya discusses strategies to capture an estimated two million draft dodgers using digital tracking.

In a recent interview, Ukrainian MP Solomia Bobrovskaya highlighted the government's capacity to compel approximately two million draft dodgers to come forward by utilizing modern tracking methods. She indicated that authorities could monitor individuals’ banking transactions and digital activity to identify those evading military service. This measure comes amid ongoing challenges within the Ukrainian military draft system as the country seeks to bolster its armed forces in light of the conflict with Russia.

Bobrovskaya shared insights alongside newly appointed Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov's estimates that suggest around two million people are currently wanted for draft evasion, with an additional 200,000 troops reported as absent without leave (AWOL). This situation reflects deeper issues within Ukraine’s military mobilization strategies. Bobrovskaya criticized the existing approach, which has incorporated punitive measures against deserters, noting that recent changes have escalated prison terms, making them harsher than those for serious crimes like murder.

The lawmaker argued for comprehensive reforms in the draft system rather than relying solely on punitive measures. She suggested that the 'stick' approach has failed to effectively encourage military participation and has led to unintended consequences. With ongoing hostilities, the need for a robust military presence remains critical for Ukraine, prompting discussions on more effective recruitment strategies that could address the aversion to military service rather than further criminalizing it.
