Costa Rica displaces Nordic countries among the happiest in the world

Costa Rica and Mexico rank as the happiest countries in the Americas, with Costa Rica at fourth place globally, according to the 2026 World Happiness Report.

According to the 2026 World Happiness Report, Costa Rica and Mexico lead the Americas in happiness, with Costa Rica achieving a remarkable fourth place globally, following Finland, Iceland, and Denmark. This report evaluates the well-being of citizens in 147 nations and highlights the increasing recognition of non-European countries in the happiness rankings.

For the ninth consecutive year, Finland holds the top spot, a notable consistency in global happiness standing, followed closely by Iceland and Denmark. Costa Rica's entry into the global top ranks is significant, especially as it breaks the traditional dominance held by Nordic countries. Professor Gerardo Leyva from Iberoamericana University pointed out the importance of Costa Rica’s rise, observing that it is often referred to as the “Switzerland of America,” indicating its high levels of happiness and quality of life.

The recognition of Costa Rica as a leading country in happiness not only challenges perceptions about regional happiness but also invites a broader discussion on the factors contributing to such well-being in non-Nordic nations. This could inspire other countries to examine and adopt successful policies or cultural practices that enhance citizens' well-being. The findings of this report underline an evolving perspective on what constitutes happiness in a globalized world, showcasing that joy and contentment are not exclusively tied to geographical or economic factors but can thrive under diverse conditions.
