Federal Police analyzes material and details new irregularities in works at the Parque das Águas in Cambuquira, MG
The Federal Police of Brazil is investigating new irregularities related to a corruption scheme involving construction works at the Parque das Águas in Cambuquira, MG.
The Federal Police (PF) of Brazil is continuing its investigation into irregularities associated with construction projects at the Parque das Águas in Cambuquira, MG, as part of 'Operation Virtuous Waters.' Six search and seizure warrants have been executed in Cambuquira, Alterosa, and Alfenas, targeting people involved in a fraud scheme related to the park's renovations. This operation has captured significant attention due to the involvement of a former mayor and other local officials in the alleged misappropriation of federal funds.
Among those being investigated is the former mayor of Cambuquira, Fabrício dos Santos Simoni, who was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020. The investigation has also involved a business owner and their company which procured a contract in 2022 linked to the park's construction. The Federal Police have noted the connection of these irregularities to the improper use of funds from two federal agreements, including a significant sum from a 2009 contract with the Ministry of Tourism and a more recent agreement from 2021 with the Ministry of the Environment, totaling almost R$ 1.5 million.
The ramifications of these findings could be substantial, not only for the individuals directly involved but also for the credibility of local government processes concerning public construction projects. As the investigation unfolds, it raises concerns about transparency, accountability, and potential reforms needed to prevent such frauds in the future, ensuring that public resources are used effectively and ethically to benefit the community.
