AFA confirmed Mauritania for the first friendly of the Argentine National Team: from playing the Finalissima to facing the 115th in the FIFA ranking
Argentina's national football team will face Mauritania in a friendly match after the cancellation of their planned game against Spain due to a conflict in Qatar.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced that the national team will play a friendly match against Mauritania on January 31, 2023, after their previously scheduled game against Spain was canceled due to a conflict in Qatar. Originally set for June 27, the match against Spain fell through due to disagreements between the AFA and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regarding the new venue. As a result, AFA officials sought a replacement opponent and confirmed Mauritania, currently ranked 115th by FIFA.
Mauritania, affectionately known as the Lions of Chinguetti, will travel to Buenos Aires to play at the famous Bombonera stadium, home to Boca Juniors. Argentina's national team, under coach Lionel Scaloni, had already announced their squad a few days prior to this development. This change in plans follows a turbulent lead-up to the original match against Spain, marked by playful jabs exchanged between officials on both sides of the Atlantic.
The AFA's attempts to find an alternative opponent highlight the challenges they faced after the cancellation, initially considering Guatemala as a possible adversary. However, FIFA regulations complicated matters, ultimately deciding against the Central American team. The match against Mauritania presents an opportunity for Argentina to regroup and showcase their talent in preparation for future competitions.
