Escalators often stop, especially in winter and spring – maintenance is now weekly at the Mikkeli shopping center

The Mikkeli shopping center has started weekly maintenance of its escalators due to frequent stops caused by small stones and other debris, particularly during the winter-spring transition.

Escalators at the Mikkeli shopping center have been experiencing frequent stops, especially during the winter and spring months. According to Kone oyj, a manufacturer of elevators and escalators, one of the main reasons for these stoppages is small pebbles getting lodged in the escalator mechanisms, which can be carried in via people's shoes. To address this issue, the shopping center has intensified cleaning in entrance areas during the sanding season to reduce the amount of debris that enters the escalators.

Despite these measures, it has been necessary to call in escalator repair services weekly throughout the winter, as the problems persist. The center's manager, Merituuli Hurmerinta, indicates that while escalator malfunctions tend to be random, the combination of small stones and other factors, such as clothing getting stuck in the escalator structure or unnecessary emergency stop button presses, contributes to the issues. The escalators are equipped with safety devices designed to halt operation immediately when an object gets trapped in the mechanism, ensuring safety for users.

While stopped escalators can be a nuisance, the shopping mall is taking proactive steps to minimize inconvenience. Continued weekly maintenance and an increased effort in cleaning should help resolve some of the underlying issues and maintain smoother operation of the escalators as shopper traffic increases during the busy seasons. This highlights a broader issue faced by many public facilities, which must balance user safety, convenience, and maintenance in their operations.
