Greek drones "made in Greece" in action: The secret premiere of UVEX 1/26
The Greek Navy has conducted its first small-scale technical exercise named "UVEX 1/26" to test and promote innovation in naval operations, involving various naval units and domestic drone technologies.
From March 9 to March 19, 2026, the Greek Navy carried out a pioneering small-scale technical exercise known as "UVEX 1/26" in the broader maritime area of the Saronic Gulf. This exercise marked the first of its kind for the Navy, aiming to foster experimentation and the advancement of innovation within naval operations. It featured numerous naval units including frigates, fast boats, patrol vessels, mine warfare units, and submersible rescue units, all equipped with unmanned aerial, surface, and subsurface vehicles from various companies, highlighting the capabilities of the domestic defense industry.
The exercise showcased the involvement of the Greek Innovation Ecosystem and encompassed the assessment of innovative systems that have been developed and manufactured by the Research, Technological Development, and Innovation Centre of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) and the 306 Telecommunications Base Factory of the Hellenic Army (306 EBT). One of the notable innovations presented was a Mobile Drone Production Unit, emphasizing Greece's commitment to enhancing its national defense capabilities through technology and local manufacturing.
This exercise not only represents a significant milestone for the Greek Navy in terms of integrating modern technologies but also signals broader implications for Greece's defense posture and industry. By combining domestic innovation with military training, Greece aims to position itself as a more self-reliant and technologically advanced player in regional security, responding effectively to emerging threats in the maritime domain.
