Digital ECA: ANPD says that systems and app stores will be scrutinized more rigorously
The Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) announced increased scrutiny of operating systems and app stores following the implementation of the Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA Digital).
On October 20, the Director of the Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), Iagê Miola, announced that with the introduction of the Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA Digital), there will be enhanced oversight on mobile operating systems and app stores. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that digital platforms comply with regulations intended to protect children's online activities. Miola stated that the ANPD has already begun monitoring the implementation of the Digital ECA, indicating that the current phase focuses on preventive measures and guidance for appropriate compliance pathways.
The recently published timeline in the "Diário Oficial da União" outlines the initial stages of the ECA Digital's rollout, emphasizing the necessity for age verification mechanisms on digital platforms. In this first phase, there will be efforts to promote understanding and clarification regarding the ECA Digital, along with the development of operational systems for age verification. These preventive measures are significant in the context of Brazil's commitment to safeguarding children and adolescents in the digital space, as they will guide developers and application hosts in adopting the required standards.
Looking ahead, the second phase, scheduled to commence in August, will continue the implementation process in a more structured manner. This ongoing development reflects Brazil's prioritization of child protection in the digital environment and underlines the legal and ethical responsibility that app developers and platform providers must uphold. As scrutiny intensifies, it will be imperative for the technology sector to adapt and ensure compliance with these new regulations to protect young users effectively.
