After the invitation from the Mārupes municipality council, land privatization regulations will be reviewed expeditedly
The Mārupes municipality council has called for a reduction in bureaucracy in land privatization procedures in rural areas.
The Mārupes municipality council has approached the Saeima's State Administration and Local Government Commission with a request to streamline the bureaucratic processes surrounding land privatization in rural regions. Currently, when dealing with applications from third parties to purchase land in rural areas, the law mandates a collective decision by the municipal council. In urban territories, however, the decision can be made by the mayor alone. This discrepancy creates delays and unnecessary bureaucracy that the municipality seeks to address.
Aivars Osītis, the head of the Mārupes municipality, highlighted that the differing processes lead to excessive administrative burdens. He pointed out that while regulations allow for a decision to be issued within 20 days of receiving an application, the scheduling of council sessions does not always align, leading to emergency meetings. This situation often turns into a 'political market' regarding whether to permit land acquisitions or not, thus complicating the already intricate process for those looking to invest and develop land in these areas.
The municipality's push to rethink the existing land privatization framework indicates a larger intention to encourage investment in rural regions, potentially leading to economic growth. Reducing bureaucratic barriers could make the process more attractive for potential buyers and stimulate local development, making it critical to monitor how these proposed changes will unfold within the legislative framework of Latvia.
