'The role of a good judge is not to be a star,' says Mendonça
Minister André Mendonça of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court emphasizes that the essence of a good judge is to focus on integrity and discretion rather than seeking the limelight.
André Mendonça, a minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in Brazil, stated that the primary function of a good judge is not to attract public attention but to conduct proceedings with integrity and discretion. Speaking during a lecture at the OAB-RJ, he articulated that his challenge is to discern what is right and to make decisions based on that understanding, emphasizing the importance of carrying out his duties without the desire for personal recognition.
Mendonça, who is currently overseeing investigations into fraud involving Banco Master, refrained from commenting specifically on the ongoing cases but highlighted the vital role of a judge to act according to ethical principles. He remarked that he does not see himself as a beacon of hope or someone with special qualities, but rather aims to fulfill his responsibilities simply by doing the right thing for the right reasons.
In recent months, Mendonça has positioned himself as a counterbalance to the prominent role of fellow STF member Alexandre de Moraes, with whom he has had public disagreements. This context underlines the dynamics within the STF as it navigates significant cases, particularly those related to financial misconduct, reflecting ongoing tensions in Brazil's judicial landscape and the expectations placed upon judges in the current political climate.
