Leaf blowers are stirring up sand again - prohibited use leads to reports

Spring has arrived early this year, causing concerns as leaf blowers are being used to remove sand despite a ban on their use in many municipalities in Finland.

The early arrival of spring this year has resulted in visible sand and gravel accumulation on streets and yards in Finland. Many municipalities have specific environmental regulations prohibiting the use of leaf blowers for the removal of this sand; however, these devices continue to be employed by both property maintenance companies and private homeowners. In Seinäjoki, the adherence to the leaf blower ban has been inconsistent, even though the regulations are clearly defined in urban planning areas, according to Hanna Latva-Kiskola, the city's environmental protection director.

Latva-Kiskola explains that while some property maintenance companies strictly follow the rules, others do not, leading to significant dust pollution in the vicinity of many homes during springtime. This disregard for regulations has prompted the local authorities to consider stronger enforcement measures. Additionally, Latva-Kiskola notes her astonishment that individuals using leaf blowers do not even wear respiratory protection, highlighting a lack of awareness regarding the potential health impacts of the dust being stirred up.

The situation underscores a broader issue of environmental compliance and public health in Finland, as local governments grapple with maintaining cleanliness while adhering to regulations designed to protect residents from harmful dust pollution. The ongoing challenges faced by municipalities in controlling the use of leaf blowers signal a need for increased public education and stricter enforcement of environmental policies to ensure compliance in the future.
