A 51-year-old man was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for attempted murder after he shot another man in a shopping center parking lot in Lahti.
In Lahti, Finland, the Päijät-Häme District Court sentenced a 51-year-old man to 4.5 years in prison for attempted murder after he shot another man in a shopping center parking lot in October 2025. The case unfolded when the defendant drove up to the victim’s location in the parking area and exited his vehicle holding a handgun. The man fired four shots close range, with at least three of them targeting the victim directly.
Two of the shots struck the victim – one hit his lower abdomen and another struck his left thigh, resulting in life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, the victim survived due to timely medical intervention. The prosecutor emphasized that the defendant was clearly trying to kill the victim, leading to the charges of attempted murder and firearms offenses, and the court deemed the evidence sufficient to impose a prison sentence.
In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the convict to pay the victim a total of 15,000 euros in damages, including compensation for pain and suffering. This decision is not yet final, as it is subject to appeal, allowing for the possibility of further legal proceedings regarding the validity of the ruling made by the court.
