Blogger criticized Putin – receiving psychiatric care
A pro-Kremlin Russian blogger, previously supportive of President Vladimir Putin, has been admitted for psychiatric care after unexpectedly criticizing him.
Ilja Remeslo, a 42-year-old lawyer and long-time supporter of President Vladimir Putin, has shocked Russian social media by publicly denouncing him in a post on Telegram titled "Five reasons I stopped supporting Vladimir Putin." In his post, he accuses Putin of being an "illegitimate" leader responsible for corruption, tyranny, and war crimes, marking a significant turning point for someone who previously defended the Kremlin and attacked opposition figures and independent journalists.
The unexpected shift in Remeslo's stance has drawn widespread attention and concern within Russian online circles, reflecting a dramatic change in his perspective that had been aligned with Kremlin propaganda for years. His sudden critique raises questions about the potential implications of dissent in the context of the current political climate in Russia, particularly as public criticism of Putin can lead to severe reactions from the authorities.
Reports indicate that shortly after his critical statements, Remeslo was admitted to a psychiatric facility in St. Petersburg, a move that has been confirmed by international media in contact with the hospital. This raises concerns about state responses to dissenting voices, as hospitalization for psychiatric reasons is often employed by authorities to silence or discredit critics, thus highlighting the precarious nature of free speech and the treatment of dissent within Russia.
