Young man from Hudiksvall convicted of murder in Iraq - avoids death penalty
A young man from Hudiksvall has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the murder of a gang leader in Iraq, with his initial death penalty sentence being commuted.
Mustafa "Benzema" Alijiburi, a prominent figure in the Foxtrot network, was shot dead on a busy street in Baghdad in January 2024. Following the incident, a 19-year-old from Hudiksvall was arrested as one of the suspected shooters. He was later sentenced to death by an Iraqi court alongside two other Swedes for their involvement in the murder.
Recently, the Swedish Foreign Ministry announced that all convicted Swedes involved in the case have had their sentences converted to life imprisonment, as reported first by Hudiksvalls Tidning. The Swedish authorities have not provided further comments on this sensitive case, keeping details under wraps, which reflects the complexities surrounding legal proceedings in foreign jurisdictions.
In the summer of 2025, the convicted man applied for his sentence to be served in Sweden. However, the Swedish Justice Department clarified that there is no extradition or transfer agreement between Sweden and Iraq, meaning that such a request cannot be fulfilled. This situation poses challenges for the individual concerning his rights and the implications of serving a life sentence in a foreign prison, reflecting deeper diplomatic and legal tensions.
