District of Freising: Help for Domestic Violence Remains Secured

Freising district has secured continued funding for its women's shelter and counseling services for victims of domestic and sexual violence amid upcoming changes in state responsibility.

Since 2021, the Freising district has been subsidizing the women's shelter and the specialist counseling service 'Hilda' to support victims of domestic and sexual violence. Due to a legislative change, the state of Bavaria will take over the responsibility for assistance programs for women affected by violence starting in 2027. This shift raised concerns from the Diakonie, the organization managing these services, about the future sustainability of these vital support programs.

However, recent decisions by the social committee of the Freising district have alleviated these fears. In their latest meeting, the committee unanimously agreed not to terminate existing agreements but instead to adjust them according to the newly defined responsibilities of the state. This decision includes a proposal from the Green party to ensure that the district will cover any gaps in funding that may arise. This proactive measure aims to maintain continuity in support services amidst the anticipated challenges due to structural changes in financial responsibilities.

Christina Mayer, head of the counseling and intervention center for domestic and sexual violence, expressed relief over the decision, stating that there were concerns about potential financial shortfalls. The resolution signifies a community commitment to safeguarding resources for vulnerable populations and demonstrates a collaborative approach to addressing domestic violence, ensuring that women in need continue to receive necessary care and support as the system evolves.
