The Prime Minister: 'Violence against a politician is violence against democracy'

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the physical assault on a political candidate, stating it undermines democracy and is incompatible with Danish values.

In a Facebook post, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reacted strongly to the recent assault on Gitte Dreier Jacobsen, an alternative party candidate, who was attacked after a voter event in Aarhus. Frederiksen emphasized that violence against any politician is an attack on the democratic process itself, expressing that such acts are utterly unacceptable and contrary to the values held dear in Denmark.

Following the incident, Torsten Gejl, a political spokesperson for Gitte's party and her partner, expressed the profound emotional distress they felt due to the violent encounter. They described their anguish over the attack which took place during a routine engagement meant to promote political discourse and participation among voters.

The incident is currently under investigation by the East Jutland Police, with investigators working to establish whether the situation constitutes a formal case of violence. The police were called to the scene to respond to reports of a disturbance after the event, highlighting the rising concerns regarding safety and civility in political interactions in Denmark, particularly as tensions in political environments increase.
