France detains suspected Russian shadow fleet ship in the Mediterranean Sea

A ship flying the Mozambican flag, suspected of being part of Russia's shadow fleet, was detained by French authorities in the Mediterranean.

The maritime prefecture of Toulon, located in the Mediterranean region of France, reported the detention of a ship suspected of operating under a foreign flag while sailing from Murmansk, northwest Russia. This action is in line with France's efforts to monitor and control maritime activities that may violate international sanctions, particularly in relation to suspected Russian operations. The ship was redirected to a designated area for further investigation after concerns about its legitimacy were raised by maritime transport authorities.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday that representatives of the French navy boarded the ship, allegedly called 'Deyna', and referred to it as a 'new shadow fleet vessel'. Macron emphasized the significance of these operations, stating that such vessels facilitate the evasion of international sanctions and violations of maritime law, ultimately aiding their operators in profiting from warfare. This statement underscores France's commitment to combating illicit maritime activities that may bolster Russia's war capacities.

In the past, France has detained at least two other vessels suspected of being part of Russia's attempts to circumvent sanctions, occurring in January and October of this year. These actions reflect an ongoing initiative to halt illegal maritime operations that finance military actions in conflict zones, reinforcing the importance of adhering to international regulations and the collective responsibility of nations to uphold maritime law against shadow fleets.
