Ragna will become the director of the Prison Authority
Ragna Bjarnadóttir has been appointed as the director of Iceland's Prison Authority, effective May 15, 2026, replacing Birgir Jónasson who held the position on a temporary basis.
Ragna Bjarnadóttir has been selected to lead the Prison Authority of Iceland, with her appointment set to take effect on May 15, 2026. The announcement comes from the Ministry of Justice, which cites legal provisions regarding the rights and responsibilities of state employees. Ragna has been with the Ministry since 2017, primarily serving as the chief of the Office of Public Safety and Judicial Security, indicating her substantial experience in managing significant public safety issues and legal matters.
Birgir Jónasson, who has been temporarily serving as the director, took over the role after Páll Winkel went on leave in 2024. Birgir, who previously held the position of police chief for the Northwestern Region of Iceland, has been on leave while stepping into the role of director of the Prison Authority. The transition reflects ongoing changes within the Ministry of Justice, with Páll Winkel recently appointed as the head of the Ministry itself, further influencing leadership roles within its agencies.
Ragna's experience within the Ministry and her management of widely impactful issues may contribute significantly to the operations and reforms needed within the Icelandic prison system. Given Iceland's focus on rehabilitative justice and the effectiveness of its correctional facilities, her leadership could signify a new strategic direction for the Prison Authority, emphasizing public safety and the rights of inmates within the correctional framework.
